Just as it's essential to create space to feel our grief and pain, it's also important to create space to tune into joy and the goodness in life. One approach to awakening to happiness is intentionally shifting our attention to things that gladden and brighten the mind. The more we practice something, the better we get at it. So if we practice worrying, we get really good at that. If we practice turning our attention to what brings some happiness, then that becomes our habit.
And this is what we will be practicing in this meditation. We'll shift our attention to something we are grateful for in our lives; to something we can call a blessing. Catholic priest, professor and writer Henri Nouwen said, "Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day." How come? Because there's a lot of evolutionary pressure to not do that. So it's a part of rebalancing the psyche. Please join me to learn this helpful and powerful technique.
