Change the game

For those days when we find ourselves stuck in old patterns of thought and of behaviour that has repeatedly let us down before. We move the body through basic poses, in a dynamic but not speedy tempo, and look for windows where we can find a different approach to those old problems. For any time of the day when you feel the need to change the game.

Psoas and hip freedom class

Have one block and a blanket handy for this class. Finding freedom in the hip means being able to move with ease and space in the hip joint. The pelvis, hip joint and thighbone are connected but to have free hip movement, the thighbone moves independently from the hip joint. This class will take you on an exploration of the muscles surrounding the hip joint in relationship to the psoas muscle. In order to release the psoas, sometimes some other muscles need to open first, other muscles need to engage more. Find out where you may be blocked in the hips and how to use asana as a way to more freedom. With CRP, Table and Cat stretches. Virabhadrasana I and Prasarita Padottasana, Badda Konasana.

Yoga on the ball, a pregnancy treat

Discover how useful a gym ball can be during your pregnancy, especially during your last stage (third trimester). When sitting on a couch becomes a bit uncomfortable, a ball can be a fantastic substitute to bounce, feel energised and to find space in the side ribs. Used as a lovely support for a floor spinal release, this can be really nice during labour too!

Adjusting the body

A great set for those of you who feel like there is something not quite right in the body, either because of repetitive motion on one side of the body, always crossing the legs on the same side, sleeping postures (side sleepers or belly sleepers) or perhaps because of trauma. These yoga postures will help reposition bones and vertebra and bring you back to homeostasis.

Includes Breath of Fire Pranayama. If you are not familiar with this technique please watch the video Breathing techniques in Kundalini yoga. Breath of Fire is not suitable if you are pregnant or menstruating.

Tiramisu means "pick me up" in Italian, probably a nod to the coffee in this popular dessert, and that is exactly what this class is meant to do: pick us up from sluggishness and laziness and make us bright and clear again. The sweetness after is a dessert in itself (almost!).

Connecting with what is in this moment, however pleasant or unpleasant. Practicing specific movements to gather and enhance the chi flow in the fingers, arms, shoulders and legs. Opening up to the chi flow leaves you feeling relaxed and makes you let go of mind ’stuff'. After having moved the chi we continue with Yin poses to release tension in the back and hips. This sequence is great if you don't have much time and feel stagnant or tense in your whole body. You can do this sequence before a stronger Yang yoga practice. Props: blanket, blocks and a pillow.

Forward bends - the awareness of the back of your body

Nice practice to become aware of the back of your body - especially the back of your legs. Bringing intelligence and presence to the part of the body (the back) that we don't see and therefore sometimes tend to neglect in our practice. The difference between tilting or bending from the hip instead of from the waist is explained in this video. All this, together with an old trick to really open the back of your legs, will make your forward bends feel easier than ever.

Step into the flowing river of movement and breath… and remember the stillness inside. We start this flow practice seated to awaken the spine and then grow from there. Standing waves that move forward and backward, up and down, right and left… every way the river flows. And always return home to source, the still sacred space inside. There are challenging poses here, but modify them! There are flows to get lost in… so do it! There is joy and pleasure here… find it.

Breath, body, mind and spirit - a Hatha experience

Our breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. When blending these together we open to the experience of being. This class in the Hatha tradition starts with Pranayama (Savitri ratio) and moves into Sun Salutations and classical standing yoga postures, held for a little longer. Coming back down to the floor, Andrew then guides us into twists from a squat, Crow pose, an arm balance from a forward bend, and finishes with Bridge posture or Upward Facing Bow. Home Is Where The Heart Is

36:15

Home is where the heart is

Home is where the heart is. I like to believe that this sentence was never meant in a philosophical way, but always in a literal way. Our home is where our physical heart is. Why is it then that for lots of us, our body doesn’t feel like home? Why is it that we treat this home in a way we would never treat the other places we call home – the houses we live in? In this class, you'll be invited to let go of your inner critic - not by ignoring or pushing her/him/it away, but by tuning in with what your body needs. You'll be guided through some slow, restorative poses and some flowing movements that'll leave you feeling connected to your body, your home.

Let your body lead the way

In this, the first class of our Revolutionise Your Yoga programme, we will explore some of the most commonly used poses in most yoga classes. Throughout the class we will work with these 3 principles:
1. Listening to your body's sensations.
2. Letting the support come from the ground, to support your position
3. Asking - can you feel a sense of space and decompression?
Using these principles as a basis, we open our minds to moving within the poses to find our own unique way of practising them so as to reap the greatest benefits, both physically, emotionally and mentally.

Discover the true inner resource of your breath and how it supports integrated easeful movement. An introduction to one of the fundamentals of Yoga and the art of breathing. Applicable to all styles. Gratefully inspired by the work of Donna Farhi and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen.

Awake

This is one of my favourite morning practices at the moment, a gentle awakening of body and mind into the adventures of the day. We finish with a chakra meditation, meant to awaken these centers along the spine. You may need a cushion or block to sit on for meditation.

Riding the restorative river

Wow… you are in for a treat.  Find a hot water bottle and the other props listed below. Turn down the lights, light some incense and TURN OFF YOUR PHONE!  This journey down the restorative river is not only a gift for your body, but a present for your spirit and healing.  David leads you into the poses, including placement of the hot water bottle, then guides you through imagery and sensations to cleanse and heal on many levels.  A true delight with a gorgeous sound track from musical friends. If you like the music, please support the artists from their websites rather than iTunes :-) Props needed: bolster, blankets (at least 2), belt, blocks (2), hot water bottle

Short no frills morning practice

Short no frills morning practice

No frills can also mean no noise: creating a bit of space within that’s free from unnecessary chatting and words. A quiet sitting time, a stimulation for the deeper abdominal region followed by Surya Namaskar. Sitting postures to open hamstrings and hips, and chest openers to finish. Open up to the joy of a new day, where you have no idea of what will happen or how things will go. A real treat for a grounding start of your day.

Note: This practice includes a headstand. If you have never practiced headstand before, please don't practice it in this class but in the presence of a live teacher first. You can practice Dolphin pose instead to build strength.

Rooting and grounding - get comfortable in your own skin

In this yoga class we work on balancing and strengthening the root chakra. Connecting to this center will help us with better elimination, connecting to our body and feeling happy and content in our own skin. This practice is invigorating so it's great to practice in the morning or during the day.

Read the blogpost about the root chakra here

The Music used is from David Lurey. You can download or buy his music here: http://www.findbalance.net/store The name of the Mantra is "Aad Gurey Nameh".

To be or not to be! That is the way to start the day

To be or not to be! That is the way to start the day

A wonderfully diverse yoga sequence for waking up in the morning that begins lying your back with some basic stretches and setting a clear distinction between your TO 'DO' LIST and TO 'BE' LIST. The sequence includes some sun salute variations to awaken major muscle groups and some standing poses to get steady for the day. Throughout the class you are doing you are invited to set your clear intentions for ways of BEing so that you have an underlying energy of your own intentions to carry you through the day.

Wake up and go

The title says it all! With less talk and a keeping fairly good pace, we flow with the breath through a lot of poses to energise and balance you for the day ahead. Great morning or lunch time class. Ideally you’ll be familiar with the poses because I keep the explanations to a minimum. Enjoy, lovely yogis!

Mindful mellow flow 5 with music

The fifth installment of this Mellow Flow series is a beautiful dance complete with music to support the flow… and a mindset of ‘uncoiling the serpent’ to keep it mellow and mindful. We circle the spine in almost every direction in this dance starting on the floor and then working our way to the feet. Flow through standing poses and hip openers with wave like fashion to awaken and elevate the energies within. Get ready to dance on the inside and free your mind and body

Earth flow

Groundedness, solidity, firmness and from there expansion and freedom... This flow will connect you to the earth to find the stability and freedom to balance in poses like Tree pose, Standing hand to big toe pose, Warrior III pose and more.
When you experience a day when you don't feel grounded (like me when I taught this class), practicing these poses aren't easy. You will likely fall over, but remember it's about the journey towards balance and not about only being able to do these poses when your balance is already great. So if you too want to practice balancing whilst feeling off kilter, join me in this class and let's fall over together :-)
