Julie’s passion for curiosity and the questioning of the “norms”, together with a lifetime of practice has led her to become a leading voice in the world of yoga. Having been brought up as a Vedantist and embracing asana later in life at 25, Julie learned that ultimately every practice, every scripture, every lineage was based on individuality, cultural aspects of the moment, opinion, and perspective. All of this is not necessarily useful or even meant for world wide consumption. During her 20 plus years of teaching she has watched the modern western world allow yoga to evolve, some for the better, some not so much.
During this 5-day immersion, Julie’s aim is to help you understand the importance of an embodied practice and she will look at the “why” and “how” of letting go of old dogmas and rules. There are no sacred cows here and everything needs to be questioned. There are reasons why we need to step back and look at what we inherited from the cross cultural transmission of yoga and discover what is still useful and relevant for the modern practitioner. This will help us to return to our commitment and motivation for being a yogi and a yoga teacher.
What to expect:
We’ll look at a lot of “why’s” and “why nots” before we delve into understanding the underlying essence of a Tantric Hatha based practice which was rooted in experiencing the present moment. We’ve got to let go of making shapes or refining them and turn inwards so that our practice expands from the inside out.
Each day we’ll take apart aspects of “understanding”, getting some background before we move forward. For teachers and practitioners alike you will experience information in your own body as well as examine it from different perspectives. We let go of “right” and “wrong” and become explorers, without an agenda, discovering the map of our bodies, minds and deeper connection to life.
9.30-5pm each day
Every morning will begin with a somatic meditation and carry on into an embodied movement practice.
After a lunch break will continue the day with a lecture, dialogue and physical practices to guide us towards truth within.
Day 1: History
How did we end up with rigid structures of practice when our goal is freedom? Should we question lineage and does the guru/disciple relationship have value for us in modern life. What does yoga mean today? If we teach, what are we really trying to share with people? Do we have to arrive at injury before we question our practice or our teachers?
Day 2: Embodiment, Somatics, Proprioception, Interoception, conscious awareness.
What do these terms really mean, why are they important and is it still yoga? Looking at the layers of practice and how to move away from shapes and stretching towards guiding a sensing and feeling experience. Understanding the communication with the nervous system in re-patterning movement and relationships.
Day 3: Looking at old alignment principles
Why were they there? What was useful, what wasn’t? How can we translate the useful stuff into new movement principles? Dropping our old teaching cues and finding a new language that helps us translate sensation and gives the practice back to the student. How to guide students to understand that their body is the vehicle by which they feel and experience and help them get beyond what they “think”.
Day 4: Stability vs Structure - Mobility vs Stretching - Moving vs Static
We are always in relationship with our bodies and when we begin a conversation of curiosity we can let go of patterns and old ideas about ourselves. We can discover this through negotiation, being in conversation with the breath and learning the difference between a physical action and awareness of action.
Day 5: What unfolds when structure is removed?
Improvisational movement and allowing the body to find its own shapes helps us to embody our stories through movement, stillness, pausing and being present. We find truth in movement no longer bound by expectations.
